Prior to his current assignment, Jim Rearden was a professor of Wildlife Management at the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1950. He was a contributor to National Geographic, Audubon, International Wildlife, Sports Afield and Field and Stream. In 1960, he joined the Commercial Fisheries Division of ADF&G, first as the assistant area biologist and then area biologist for Cook Inlet, overseeing commercial fisheries management. In 1968, he became the outdoors editor for Alaska Magazine. In 1976, Mr. Rearden became the field editor for Outdoor Life. He is a recipient of an award for his book Wonders of Caribou from the National Science Teachers Association and Children's Book Council Joint Committee in 1976. The National Wildlife Federation and the Alaska Sportsmen Council named him as the Conservation Communicator of the Year for Alaska in 1980. Mr. Rearden also received awards from the Alaska Press Club in 1987 and 1988 and was named Conservation Communicator for Alaska in 1993 by the Alaska Outdoor Council and the Alaska Fish and Wildlife Conservation Fund. In 1996, he was presented The Sidney Huntington Award by the Alaska Outdoor Council and the Alaska Fish and Wildlife Conservation Fund for his work in wildlife conservation. Mr. Rearden holds an honorary degree of Doctor of Science from the University of Alaska Fairbanks and a PhD from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He also holds a Master of Science degree in wildlife conservation from the University of Maine.
