Barbara Slavin focuses on national and international security issues for the paper. She does not appreciate press releases, but understands she will always receive them. Any phone calls should be made before noon.[CR-LF][CR-LF]She was previously the senior diplomatic and foreign affairs reporter for USA Today--a role she held from 1996 to 2008--with the responsibility for analyzing foreign news and U.S. foreign policy. She covered such key issues as the U.S.-led war on terrorism, policies toward "rogue" states, the reform movement in Iran, and the Arab-Israeli conflict. She has also accompanied two secretaries of state on official travels and reported from Libya, Israel, Egypt, North Korea, Russia, China, Saudi Arabia and Syria. Before joining USA Today, Ms. Slavin was a Washington-based writer for the Economist and the Los Angeles Times. She covered domestic and foreign policy issues, including the 1991-93 Middle East peace talks. Prior to that, she was based in Cairo as Middle East correspondent for the Economist. She traveled widely, covered the Iran-Iraq war, the 1986 U.S. bombing of Libya, the political evolution of the Palestine Liberation Organization and the resurgence of Islamic fundamentalism. She has also worked out of Tokyo and Beijing.[CR-LF][CR-LF]Ms. Slavin received her bachelor's degree in Russian language and literature from Harvard University in 1972. Upon graduation, she worked for United Press International in New York City as a reporter and editor, and then as a foreign news writer and editor for the New York Times' Week in Review section.
