13% of the world population in 2020 suffered the theft of their health data

The pandemic has weakened the health sector, causing an increase in the thefts of medical records and damages to hospitals.

According to Helpransomware, a company specializing in ransomware removal and encrypted data recovery, during the past year, 20% of ransomware attacks involved healthcare companies. 1 in 7 citizens has suffered an attack.

Since November there has been a 45% increase in cyber attacks against hospitals, equal to double those in all other sectors (22%). The areas with the highest growth rates were:

  • Central Europe (145%);

  • East Asia (137%);

  • Latin America (112%).

The most motivated hackers also take control of hospital systems, causing serious consequences for the health of citizens:

  • Damage to computer machinery and devices;

  • Use of incorrect diagnostic protocols;

  • Delivery of an unreliable test to the patient.

Not surprisingly, there has been a 3.6% increase in fatal accidents due to cardiac events in hospitals that have recently suffered a cyber attack.

Hackers attacked these hospitals during the pandemic using two methodologies:

  1. Pishing e-mails with attachments created to mislead the user.

  2. Password spraying campaigns to access systems and carry out spying operations.

In addition, the theft of sensitive information at the expense of healthcare companies encourages new attempts at online fraud: scamming patients or relatives could be easier by having people's health information available.

That's why health data can be worth even more than credit card information.

As pointed out by the Helpransomware experts:

"The current price of a single folder containing the identification data of individuals, with names, social security codes, dates of birth and current account numbers, varies from 14 to over 25 euros each."

In addition, cybercriminals target healthcare companies because, at this stage, they pay the ransom more easily than other organizations: having to manage an emergency situation, hospitals often prefer to pay thousands of euros to recover sensitive data.

Despite the problems related to the management of the pandemic, it is preferable not to give in to the proposals of cyber criminals: in these cases you can rely on Helpransomware to eliminate ransomware and encrypted files in a very short time.
