Two-Step Disinfection Procedure Begins Testing With Mayo Clinic Ambulances

OMNI Solutions, a company specialized in ultraviolet disinfection, has recently partnered with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, to test a new disinfection technology. The new technology, Shock and Shield, utilizes a two-step process that starts with UV disinfection, killing up to 99.999% of bacteria and viruses”including MERS and SARS. Then a non-toxic coating is applied that forms a layer of nano spikes on the surface, preventing new virus and bacteria growth for up to 90 days.

Testing began the week of April 27 in Mayo Clinic ambulances with expansion possible to other Mayo Clinic vehicles and equipment. œThe combination of ultraviolet disinfection and anti-viral protectant is an all-natural solution that provides up to 90 days of protection. That's a powerful aid for health care and business in the midst of a pandemic, said senior vice president for OMNI Solutions, Paul Jewison.

A new procedure that prevents virus reproduction on high-touch surfaces could prove significant as retailers, restaurants and other high-traffic social areas begin to reopen in the coming weeks. Current methods of disinfection only last until someone makes new contact with the surface. However, a surface covered in nano spikes will prevent viral reproduction even on high-touch surfaces for months at a time.

For its UV disinfection, OMNI Solutions developed a mobile surface disinfection unit, AURA. These mobile units have been used to disinfect trucks, rooms, and cafeterias. It can disinfect an ambulance in under 10 minutes. The unit was engineered to be user-friendly with shatterproof lamps and standard wall-socket compatibility.

Step two of Shock and Shield uses OMNIShield, an innovative coating that mechanically prevents the growth of microorganisms. The coating forms a shield of nano spikes on the substrate. The positively charged spikes attract negatively charged microorganisms, piercing and killing them when contact is made.

The spikes persist for 90 days. A surface disinfected with standard chemicals is only safe until the next person touches it. A surface coated with OMNIShield protects high-touch surfaces for months.
