Before joining the Globe in 2000, he worked for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer as the city hall reporter and state house bureau chief in Olympia; the Patriot Ledger as a general assignment reporter; and the San Antonio Light as a political reporter. He co-authored a book, "Betrayal: The Crisis in the Catholic Church," which was published in hardcover in June 2002 and in paperback in March 2003. [CR-LF][CR-LF]He is a member of the Society of Professional Journalists and the Religion Newswriters Association. In 2003, he received a Pulitzer Prize in public service for his reporting on clergy sexual abuse in the Catholic Church. He has won numerous other reporting awards from groups such as the Society of Professional Journalists, the Religion Communicators Council, the Religion Newswriters Association, the American Academy of Religion and the Associated Press Managing Editors. He studied at Haverford College (Pa.). A native of Newton, Mass., he now lives in Boston.
