Ms. Jeanne Mariani-Belding joined The Advertiser as editorial and opinion editor in 2004. Her position is a new management position with oversight responsibility for the newspaper's editorials, op-ed and Focus-section pages. Those pages emphasize interaction with the public through town halls and forums, "The Hot Seat" blog and other initiatives.[CR-LF][CR-LF]She grew up in Hawaii and prior to her current position, worked as deputy editor of the San Jose Mercury News since 1997 where she was assistant city editor, editor of the award-winning Race and Demographics team, senior editor for special projects, and deputy editor, the No. 2 position on the newspaper's opinion staff. [CR-LF][CR-LF]She previously had worked at the Los Angeles Daily News, where she was a metro reporter, assistant city editor and editorial writer and columnist; at the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, where she was a reporter, and at Vista Press in San Diego County. [CR-LF][CR-LF]A Maryknoll School graduate, Ms. Mariani-Belding earned her journalism degree at Pepperdine University. In 2003, she was a John S. Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford University. [CR-LF][CR-LF]She has held leadership positions in the Asian American Journalists Association and was a programming co-chairwoman for the 2004 UNITY Journalists of Color conference, which attracted more than 7,000 registrants. Conference speakers included President Bush and his challenger, Sen. John Kerry. [CR-LF][CR-LF]Her work has been honored by Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, the California Chicano News Media Association, the California Newspaper Publishers Association and other groups. [CR-LF][CR-LF]Ms. Mariani-Belding is a frequent speaker at journalism workshops and seminars, and has created and run a mentoring program for journalism students in partnership with San Jose State University.
