Andrea Warren is a freelance writer based in Kansas City, KS who writes groundbreaking non-fiction books about history for young readers and about young people caught up in historical events. [CR-LF][CR-LF]Warren says she writes about children at least in part because she believes children are very underrepresented in history and because she finds children interesting. She says her challenge is to write books of non-fiction that are just as engaging as fiction.[CR-LF][CR-LF]Warren's writing career has spanned most of her adult life. In high school and college, she wrote newspaper articles and columns. She graduated from the University of Nebraska with a Master's degree in British Literature and wrote her first stories for publication while teaching high school English and History in Hastings, Nebraska. She completed another Master's degree in Magazine Journalism at the University of Kansas and after briefly editing a magazine and working as a newspaper reporter, began her career as a freelance writer, contributing to many major magazines and starting work on her first books. [CR-LF][CR-LF]Warren's books include: Orphan Train Rider: One Boy's True Story; Pioneer Girl: Growing Up on the Prairie; Surviving Hitler: A Boy in the Nazi Death Camps; We Rode the Orphan Trains; and Escape From Saigon: How A Vietnam War Orphan Became An American Boy. [CR-LF][CR-LF]Mrs. Warren's books have won many awards, including the prestigious Boston Globe-Horn Book Award for Orphan Train Rider, and the 2004 William Allen White Award for Children's Literature. [CR-LF][CR-LF]Andrea Warren has been featured twice on National Public Radio, C-SPAN's "Booknotes," and the programs Crossroads, Writers on Writing, Between the Lines, Meet the Author, and CBS This Morning. She has been interviewed in a long list of publications, including the Boston Globe, the Washington Post, and the Kansas City Star. She has appeared at the Truman Presidential Library, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and at several dozen schools, libraries, and universities across the country. Her books are regularly reviewed in such publications as Publishers Weekly, Booklist, Kirkus Reviews, School Library Journal, and The Horn Book.[CR-LF][CR-LF]Warren writes from her home office in Kansas City and is currently at work on two more books of historical nonfiction for young readers. Her hobbies include travel, movies, theater, reading, walking, and visiting with friends and family.
