Bill Hornaday specializes in stories dealing with utilities and power plants, but he will cover any regional business story that affects people's daily lives and will appeal to a large population. Mr. Hornaday says his stories go beyond "the newest product" and should be something major that "editors will want on page one." He says that most of the stories he writes "take some time to flesh out" and tend to be fairly complicated. [CR-LF][CR-LF]Pitch him via e-mail; he appreciates attachments when they open properly. He says fax is a good backup but should not be the primary method of pitching stories. He thinks that different stories require different information, and is particularly interested in issues that affect the public at large or people in his part of the country. Additionally, he says a rural slant is helpful because even within Little Rock, Arkansas is a very rural state. Although he has also written features pieces in the past, he says that the Democrat-Gazette is "very much a straight news newspaper." Mr. Hornaday has also written for the Indianapolis Star, where he covered the third-largest corporate bankruptcy case in U.S. history (Conseco Inc.). He then spent four years at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, where he covered a variety of business topics.
