Mr. Harwood Verified

John Harwood writes a weekly column for Washington Wire and oversees the The Wall Street Journal/NBC News polls in addition to being a CNBC chief Washington correspondent and a writer for the New York Times.[CR-LF][CR-LF]His journalism career started as a copy boy at the now-defunct Washington Star. He studied economics and history at Duke University. Following his graduation, he joined the St. Petersburg Times, where he covered police, politics and local government, and worked on investigative projects. He later served as the newspaper's state capital correspondent, Washington correspondent and political editor. While at the Times, he wrote about the issue of apartheid in South Africa, which he visited three times during the 1980s.[CR-LF][CR-LF]Harwood was named a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, where he spent the 1989-90 academic year. He joined The Wall Street Journal in 1991 as White House correspondent and later covered Congress and national politics. He became national political editor in 1997. In addition, Harwood writes the paper's political column 'Capital Journal.' He has been a commentator on the PBS show 'Washington Week' and NBC's 'Meet the Press.'
