What Type Of Returns Would Wave Electronics’Shareholders Have Earned If They Purchased Their Shares Three Years Ago?

Wave Electronics Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:095270) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 26% in the last month. But the last three years have seen a terrible decline. Indeed, the share price is down a whopping 87% in the last three years. So we’re relieved for long term holders to see a bit of uplift. But the more important question is whether the underlying business can justify a higher price still.

We really feel for shareholders in this scenario. It’s a good reminder of the importance of diversification, and it’s worth keeping in mind there’s more to life than money, anyway.

Given that Wave Electronics didn’t make a profit in the last twelve months, we’ll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. That’s because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

Over the last three years, Wave Electronics’ revenue dropped 9.7% per year. That’s not what investors generally want to see. The share price fall of 23% (per year, over three years) is a stern reminder that money-losing companies are expected to grow revenue. We’re generally averse to companies with declining revenues, but we’re not alone in that. Don’t let a share price decline ruin your calm. You make better decisions when you’re calm.

A Different Perspective

Wave Electronics shareholders are down 67% for the year, but the market itself is up 86%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Regrettably, last year’s performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 13% per year over five years. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Take risks, for example – Wave Electronics has 4 warning signs (and 1 which is significant) we think you should know about.
