NEW DELHI: The government on Wednesday termed Rahul Gandhi’s tweet on the cancellation of the India-Russia summit as “false and misleading”, explaining that the scheduled meeting between the two nations was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Earlier today, the Congress leader attributed to a news report that claimed the recent cancellation of the India-Russia annual summit, the first in two decades, was due to Moscow’s unease with Quad — a group of US, Japan, Australia and India to counter Chinese influence in Indo-Pacific region.
The ministry of external affairs said that the scheduled summit was canceled due to a coronavirus pandemic.
“This was a mutually agreed decision between the two governments. Any imputation otherwise is false and misleading. Spreading false stories in important relationships is particularly irresponsible,” the ministry of external affairs spokesperson said.
The United Arab Emirates’ highest Islamic authority, the UAE Fatwa Council, has ruled that coronavirus vaccines are permissible for Muslims even if they contain pork gelatin. The ruling follows growing alarm that the use of pork gelatin, a common vaccine ingredient, may hamper vaccination among Muslims who consider the consumption of pork products “haram”, or forbidden under Islamic law.
The campaign held over years for the construction of Lord Ram’s temple in Ayodhya was aimed at helping Hindus rid their “defeatist mentality“, senior Maharashtra BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis said. “Protests held over years for the construction of a temple to Lord Ram in Ayodhya were aimed at making Hindus shed their ‘parabhut mansikta‘ (defeatist mentality),”he said.
Earlier today, Rahul Gandhi, in a tweet had said: “Russia is a very important friend of India. Damaging our traditional relationships is short-sighted and dangerous for our future.”
Shortly after the ministry of external affairs statement, the Russian ambassador to India concurred with the Indian government.
“In touch with India to work out new dates for the India-Russia Annual Summit, postponed due to epidemiological reasons. We’re confident that it will be held in the near future, while the Russian-Indian relations will continue its further development,” the Russian ambassador to India was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
