Marcy Sugar was born and raised in Chicago. She graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1973 with a major in mass communications. During the '70s, she learned of an opening in Ann Landers' office at the Chicago Sun-Times. Sugar met with Eppie Lederer -- "Ann Landers" -- and was hired immediately. She began doing basic research and clerical tasks, then moved into bookkeeping. She also worked on Lederer's speaking engagements and helped dig up useful information and opinions to add to the column. In 1979, she left to raise a family, then returned, part time, in 1988. Shortly thereafter, she resumed full-time work as Lederer's editorial assistant, helping to select letters, research answers and edit them. Marcy has been married to a prominent Chicago attorney for 28 years. They have three sons. She and long-time friend Kathy Mitchell now team up to provide answers to "Dear Annie" letters. Their column, Annie's Mailbox, appears in more than 700 newspapers.
