Andrea Roane has been an anchor and reporter for WUSA-TV 9 News since 1981. Roane began her career as the Sunday and 6:30 a.m. anchor. In 1983, she moved to the co-anchor spot with Bob Dalton at noon. In 1989, Roane co-anchored the 4 p.m. news with Mike Buchanan. In 1995, she co-anchored the 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts with Gordon Peterson. In October 2000, Roane was re-teamed with Mike Buchanan for the 5, 6, and 9 a.m. newscasts. [CR-LF][CR-LF]In her career, Roane has covered a wealth of hard news stories, from politics, the arts, education, sports, to women's health issues. Before joining the channel 9 news team, Roane was the host and chief correspondent of WETA'S Metro Week in Review. She also produced public affairs programs and hosted a monthly arts show. [CR-LF][CR-LF]In response to a moving story about a woman with breast cancer, Roane initiated an innovative Washington, D.C. breast cancer awareness program, Buddy Check 9. On the ninth of every month, Roane encourages viewers to team up with a friend or relative to follow the National Cancer Institute's 3-step breast examination early detection program. Since its inception, thousands of Washington-area women and men have signed on to the program. [CR-LF][CR-LF]Roane co-chairs the Kennedy Center Community and Friends Board, and is a board member of the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Roane is also a member of the Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation Board, the Howard University Hospital Cancer Advisory Board, the National Catholic Education Association Board. She is a trustee of the Catholic University of America. Roane is a member of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta Federal Association and the Women's Forum of Washington. She is a lifetime member of both the NAACP and the National Council of Negro Women. [CR-LF][CR-LF]Roane has interviewed community leaders, entertainers, and politicians. She covered the 1996 Republican and Democratic conventions. A native of New Orleans, La, Roane was an education reporter for WWL-TV, the CBS affiliate. [CR-LF][CR-LF]She entered broadcasting in 1975 as an education reporter for the New Orleans public television station, WYES-TV. In 1977, she hosted a weekly magazine show and was the station's project director of a federally funded education show. Roane is a former middle school and high school English teacher. She was also coordinator of cultural services for the New Orleans Parish Public Schools. She served as administrator/principal of the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, the city's high school for the performing arts. [CR-LF][CR-LF]She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in speech education and a Master of Arts degree in drama and communications from Louisiana State University in New Orleans. Roane and her husband, reside in Washington, D.C. and have two children.
