Charlie Pierce is a sports analyst for National Public Radio's (NPR) sports program, Only A Game, at WBUR-AM. In addition to his current assignment, he is a regular panelist on NPR's game show, Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me, and is a host on ESPN radio. [CR-LF][CR-LF]Mr. Pierce began his career in journalism as a writer for the Milwaukee papers, and has written for the alternative press, which includes the Worcester Magazine and the Boston Phoenix. He was a sports columnist for the Boston Herald, and a feature writer and columnist for the The National, which is no longer in print. His work has also appeared in the Boston Globe, the New York Times Magazine, the LA Times Magazine and the Chicago Tribune. In 1997, he became a writer at large for Esquire magazine, and in April 2002, he joined the staff of the Boston Globe Sunday Magazine.[CR-LF][CR-LF]Mr. Pierce is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the third place award in the PBWAA Dan S. Blumenthal Memorial Writing Contest. He has been named a finalist for both the Associated Press Sports Editor's award (best column writing) and the 1996 National Magazine Award for for his piece on Alzheimer's disease, entitled, "In the Country of My Disease." The piece was expanded into a book, known as "Hard to Forget: An Alzheimer's Story," published by Random House.[CR-LF][CR-LF]Mr. Pierce is a 1975 graduate of Marquette University, and studied journalism and brewery tours. He was formerly a forest ranger for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
