John Hoeffel is the state editor for the Los Angeles Times.[CR-LF][CR-LF]Previously, he was a national political editor for the paper, and covered local and federal government and politics.[CR-LF][CR-LF]Before that, Mr. Hoeffel was a state editor for metro news and worked out of the Washington bureau of the Times. He first joined The Times in 2004 as a deputy metro editor, handling city/county news, and took over the staff of seven state correspondents[CR-LF]last year. He came to The Times from the San Jose Mercury News, where he did stints as national and foreign editor, deputy city editor and government and politics editor.[CR-LF][CR-LF]He has also spent 11 years at the Winston-Salem Journal, where he covered education, business and spent six years as the paper's Washington, D.C., correspondent. Earlier, he worked at the Greenville News.[CR-LF][CR-LF]Mr. Hoeffel has bachelor's degrees in history and chemistry from Cornell University and a master's degree in journalism from Columbia.
