Guy Hedgecoe is a journalist based in Madrid, Spain.

Two decades in journalism, firstly as a reporter in South America, and more recently as a newspaper editor and print and broadcast freelance journalist in Madrid, covering Spain and Portugal.

I am author of 'Freezing Franco: The Battle for Spain's Memory', an essay examining modern Spain's relationship with its violent past.

I cover Spain and Portugal for the BBC, The Irish Times, POLITICO and Deutsche Welle radio. I have also reported for Al Jazeera, France 24, Global Post and AP.

I was a writer and editor at El País English edition between 2003 and 2009, and editor-in-chief for three years. Between 2010 and 2013 I was founding editor of Iberosphere.com, which offered comment and analysis on Spanish news and countries within its sphere of influence.

Previously, I covered Ecuador and Peru for Bridge News wire service, before setting up my own subscriber-based newsletter in Ecuador and working as a newspaper and broadcast freelancer for the Financial Times, The Miami Herald, CNN and other media.
