Mr. Crowell Verified

John Crowell has been an editorial writer for the Republican-American since 1997. He took this position after 21 years as a reporter and editor at the paper. He was a contributing editor to the newspaper's investigation into corruption during the administration of Waterbury Mayor Joseph Santopietro, and this coverage won the national Roy Howard Award for public service in 1991. He has also won several awards for writing and editing on stories as diverse as blizzards, prison riots, and charity fund-raising. He was a reporter at the Republican-American for seven years, covering Beacon Falls, Prospect, the Region 16 school district, the Litchfield Superior Court, Torrington, and Litchfield County features. In 1983, he became an assistant state news editor, and in 1989 he became regional editor in charge of local news. He is a graduate of Watertown High School and Eastern Connecticut State University.
